than the castle.

This woodland viewing terrace above the town was built by Bojnice Spa in 2016. It overlooks Bojnice, Prievidza, the Prievidza Basin, the Vtáčnik mountains and the surrounding countryside.

When the Dinono dinosaur park opened in 2022, the terrace became part of it. Access requires a ticket to the park, which is below the Čajka v oblakoch observation tower.

This private museum showcases the colours, structures and forms created by nature. Its collection includes 25,000 minerals and gemstones across several sections: rough and cut gemstones, synthetic stones and imitations, UV minerals, Slovak opals and decorative rocks.

The collection tour is followed by a visit to the gemstone cutting and goldsmith workshops, as well as an accredited laboratory for authenticating and valuing minerals, gemstones and jewellery.

The museum also explores mining history. Dozens of historical objects include miners’ ceremonial axes, badges, lamps, equipment, instruments and an authentic mining uniform. Visits must be arranged in advance by email.

The present church was built in the Gothic style between 1370 and 1380. Archaeological excavations revealed the remains of an earlier Romanesque religious building beneath its foundations. The church has undergone several alterations over the centuries.

One of the most significant changes was the construction of the square tower in the 17th century, funded by the Pálffy family. In the 18th century, the rectory was rebuilt in the Baroque style and the entrance gate of the adjoining cemetery was converted into chapels. Some stations of the Bojnice Calvary and the Chapel of St Wendelin in the woods above the castle also date from this period.

In the early 20th century, provost K. A. Medvecký helped modernise the parish buildings. He had electricity installed in the church and rectory, and during his tenure the church received an almost new wooden organ from the state.

The church was renovated in the 1950s and declared a national cultural monument in 1963. Further building and restoration work took place between 2003 and 2005, alongside a detailed archaeological investigation.

House at 7 Hurbanovo Square

This two-storey late Renaissance house dates from the second half of the 17th century and has been a national cultural monument since 1963. It houses the House of Illusions, featuring optical illusions and trick art.

House at 40 Hurbanovo Square

Locals know this Renaissance corner house from the late 16th century as “Pálffy’s stables”, although it was never used to stable horses. The house and cellar are protected heritage buildings. Today it accommodates a brewery, restaurant, café and the Mysterium Bojnice escape room.

House at 61 Hurbanovo Square – Pivár

This former coaching inn from the 1750s is a four-wing Baroque building with vaulted ground-floor spaces. A national cultural monument since 1963, it houses businesses on the ground floor and the town’s ceremonial hall upstairs.

House at 68 Hurbanovo Square

The house opposite Pivár was built in the Renaissance style in the late 16th century. It acquired a Baroque appearance after a fire in 1742; restoration in the early 21st century returned its Renaissance character. It now houses the Municipal Library.

This late Baroque statue of the Virgin Mary stands on a pedestal in the portico of the Chapel of St Michael within the parish church grounds. A replica occupies its original site in the lower castle park, near Hurbanovo Square. The original dates from the 1740s and was declared a national cultural monument in 1992.

The Roman Catholic branch church in Dubnica is one of the newest in the Bojnice parish. It was built between 1998 and 2000; Pope John Paul II blessed its foundation stone in 1995. Residents initiated the project because they previously had only a small 18th-century bell tower and had to travel into central Bojnice for Mass.

Initial support from partner towns made it possible to hold services in Dubnica and raise funds for a new church. Residents ultimately built it themselves, making the church a reminder of their shared effort.

Lusatian culture hillfort

A small refuge hillfort of the Lusatian culture survives on the wooded Hradište hill northwest of Dubnica. During the later Bronze Age and early Iron Age, it served as a shelter in times of danger rather than a permanent settlement. A substantial elliptical rampart protects the summit plateau, while the Dubnička stream flows along the northern side of the hill.

Excavations in the 1980s revealed the structure of the rampart and uncovered pottery and bronze finds. The site has been a national cultural monument since 1967; please respect its archaeological protection when visiting.
